They are children of working poor: invisible and voiceless, hidden in inner city neighborhoods and housing projects. These children are at risk of hunger daily. Their parents struggle in minimum-wage jobs to make ends meet. And the children struggle to keep up in school because an empty stomach inhibits a child's ability to learn. Their despair of hunger affects children's physical, mental, spiritual, and social growth. Their cognitive development will be hindered, and their abilities will be impaired for a lifetime.

Children constitute one-third of the needy, although they are only one-quarter of the overall population. And there are 12 million needy children throughout the United States, a land of wealth and resources

In the Denver metro area, 27 percent of children live in poverty and at risk of hunger. These children from disadvantaged families, through no fault of their won, face a lifetime of difficulty. Denver Rustler Kids Cafe offers hope. Food Bank of the Rockies gives these children a chance

In 1994, Food bank of the Rockies opened the doors of Denver Rustler Kids Cafe to hundreds of at-risk children. Using church facilities, schools, Boys & Girls Clubs, and community centers, Denver Rustler Kids Cafe has grown to provide 100,000 meals annually to children in need. Meals are served in conjunction with recreation, tutoring, mentoring, leadership, and gang-intervention activities .These combined efforts allow children to focus and learn, paving the way to a brighter future.

Volunteers - mostly parents, grandparents, and neighbors - help serve the meals, spreading the magic of self-esteem throughout the children's families and community. Denver Rustler kids Cafe needs you:
